The practical goal is to avoid growing the same plant family in the same patch year after year—especially when that family has suffered a soil-borne disease or persistent pest. A tiny garden may never achieve a perfect rotation, perennial vegetables do not move, and some pests travel too far for a few feet of relocation to stop them. The simple answer

Divide the annual vegetable-growing area into four equal zones. Group crops by botanical family, not by the part you eat. In year one, place nightshades in Bed A, legumes and flexible crops in Bed B, brassicas in Bed C, and roots/alliums in Bed D. The following year, move each group forward one bed. After four seasons, every group returns to its starting point. Keep a dated map so tomatoes do not accidentally follow potatoes or broccoli follow radishes.

What crop rotation can—and cannot—do

Rotation creates time and distance between a susceptible crop and pests or pathogens that remain in soil or crop debris. Tomatoes and potatoes look and grow differently, but both belong to the nightshade family. Broccoli, kale, cabbage, radish, and turnip are all brassicas. A gardener who replaces diseased tomatoes with potatoes has changed the crop but not created a meaningful family rotation.

Rotation can also distribute feeding patterns. Group 1: Nightshades

Tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, eggplants, and tomatillos share important disease relationships. Track this group carefully if you have experienced bacterial wilt, Verticillium wilt, Fusarium issues, early blight residue, or potato pests. Do not compost seriously diseased material unless your local guidance confirms that your system can destroy the pathogen.

Potatoes consume more bed space than many gardeners expect. If your garden is tiny, grow potatoes in containers or a separate plot and reserve the main nightshade zone for tomatoes and peppers. The rotation record should still note every container if its potting mix is later spread in the garden.

Group 2: Legumes and flexible crops

Peas and beans make a useful break between demanding families. They host nitrogen-fixing bacteria in root nodules when the correct organisms are present, but much of the nitrogen is removed in harvested seed and pods. Rotation is particularly valuable where clubroot is a concern, although the pathogen can survive for many years; confirmed cases require local, disease-specific advice rather than a routine four-year return.

Many brassicas are heavy feeders. Base compost and fertilizer decisions on soil condition and crop demand. Avoid assuming that every brassica bed needs the same nitrogen dose: a long-season cabbage and a quick radish crop are not equivalent.

Group 4: Roots and alliums

This convenient planning group actually contains several families. Carrots, parsnips, celery, parsley, and dill are in the carrot family; onions, garlic, leeks, shallots, and chives are in the onion family; beets and spinach belong to another family. They can share a bed for a simple plan, but preserve the individual family names in your records. If carrot rust fly, white rot, or another specific issue appears, you will need that detail.

Root vegetables do not “clean up” nutrients left by other crops in a perfectly predictable way. Their place in the sequence is mainly an organizational tool. Fine, stone-free soil, appropriate pH, steady moisture, and restrained nitrogen matter more to root quality than folklore about the ideal crop order.

Step 1: Draw what exists

Measure the growing area and sketch permanent beds, containers, paths, greenhouse soil, and perennial plantings. The drawing does not need to be attractive. Its job is to show exactly where roots grew. Number beds instead of relying on “left” and “right,” which become confusing when you face the garden from another direction.

Step 2: Separate annual and permanent crops

Asparagus, rhubarb, strawberries, globe artichokes in suitable climates, and perennial herbs remain in place and do not belong in the annual rotation. Give them dedicated areas. Their pest and fertility management still matters, but forcing them into a moving chart makes the chart unusable.

Step 3: List crops by family and quantity

Write every crop you realistically intend to grow, then assign a family. Add the number of plants or row length. This reveals whether equal quarters make sense. Traditional rotation charts often prescribe heavy manure before one group and assume the following crops will use what remains. That can work in a specific soil, but it should not replace testing. Test soil every few years and add mature compost in measured amounts. Feed demanding crops according to need. Legumes may need little nitrogen but still require suitable pH, phosphorus, potassium, and micronutrients. Roots may fork in fresh manure or overly rich soil.
